Why We Don’t Offer In Person Visits

🐾Protecting Our Kittens & Why We Limit Visits

Pawrents, please read this! Ever wonder why almost every reputable cattery says, β€œno in-person visits”? It’s not because breeders are being cold or unfriendly β€” there are actually a lot of important health and safety reasons behind it that most people don’t know about.

🐈 Kittens are extremely vulnerable

  • never know what viruses or bacteria may be on the bottom of your shoes. Feline panleukopenia (parvo) can survive for 3–6 months at room temperature, and even years in freezing temperatures. Regular household cleaners often do not kill it.
  • Shoes are one of the biggest carriers of germs: apartment grass areas, vet clinics, stray cat areas β€” one step in the wrong place can bring disease into a cattery.
  • Clothing and phones can also transfer viruses. Diseases can spread through a β€œcat β†’ human β†’ cat” route.
  • Kittens and pregnant queens have very weak immune systems. Mortality rates for infected kittens can be extremely high.
  • Many catteries have lost entire litters because of one careless visit, causing devastating emotional and financial loss.
  • Even healthy adult cats can unknowingly carry viruses without showing symptoms. A visitor may have no idea they recently stepped in a contaminated area or handled another animal carrying illness before entering a cattery.

🐈 Breeder safety matters too

  • Most reputable catteries are home-based, not storefront businesses.
  • Privacy concerns: breeders’ home addresses and personal lives become exposed. Some breeders have dealt with harassment, unwanted visitors, and nonstop calls.
  • Financial risk: purebred kittens and breeding cats can be extremely valuable, and unfortunately theft does happen.
  • Personal safety: many breeders are women meeting strangers alone at home, or have young children, which can be risky.
  • Many breeders are also balancing family life, children, pregnancies, vet visits, feeding schedules, and around-the-clock kitten care inside their homes. Maintaining a calm and controlled environment is extremely important.

🐈 Stress can genuinely be dangerous for cats

  • Cats are extremely sensitive animals. To many cats, strangers entering their environment can feel very stressful.
  • Stress is more than just β€œbeing scared.” It can lead to appetite loss, lowered immunity, urinary issues, fatty liver disease, and in severe cases even sudden death.

🐈 A large percentage of sudden cat deaths are believed to be connected to stress-related factors.

  • Some kittens may stop eating for hours after stressful situations. Pregnant queens can become anxious or stop caring for babies if repeatedly disturbed.

🐈 Breeding routines cannot constantly be disrupted

  • Responsible catteries operate on strict schedules: feeding routines, breeding separation, sanitation, and vaccination timing. Even a short visit can interrupt important care routines or stress pregnant queens.
  • Young kittens also go through critical socialization and immune development stages, and maintaining consistency during this time is extremely important.

🐈 How can you verify a breeder without visiting?

These methods are often safer and more reliable than visiting in person:

β€’ Live video calls to view the kittens and environment in real time
β€’ Growth records and updates from birth through weaning
β€’ Registration paperwork, pedigrees, vaccine records, etc.
β€’ Health guarantees and breeder support
β€’ Reviews and updates from previous families

A responsible breeder should also be willing to answer detailed questions, provide updated photos/videos, and stay available for support even after kittens go home.

🐈 Red flag warning

If a breeder allows unrestricted visits to anyone at any time, cannot provide proof of registration or health records, or pushes kittens home before 12 weeks old β€” that is a major red flag.

Many backyard breeders rely heavily on emotional impulse purchases and quick pickups instead of focusing on health, socialization, and proper development.

A breeder saying β€œno visits” is not about distrusting you. It’s about protecting the health and safety of the kittens.

🐾 Hoping every future cat parent finds a trustworthy breeder and brings home a healthy, happy kitten.
